Our Rating

9 / 10

Young kids always want to play on their parents’ tablet or phone. The DragonTouch KidzPad Y88X 10 is made specifically for kids in mind. From a bright, kid-friendly case to age-appropriate apps, this tablet quickly gets kids started playing online with fun apps. Plus, there are parental controls built in to ensure your child doesn’t explore any further than you want them to. I got the chance to try out this tablet for myself, and even though it’s made for kids, it’s fun for adults, too.

A Lot of Fun in a Bright Package

I highly suggest setting up this tablet before your child sees it. Otherwise, they’re going to want to immediately play with it. Unlike many tablets, the Dragon Touch KidzPad Y88X 10 comes with a protective case already on it. It comes in blue and pink, both of which are bright colors.

I fully believe adults’ tablets need to come in a case like this, too. The back and sides are padded to protect against bangs and bumps. The tablet sets recessed inside to further protect the screen if your kid drops it, which, let’s be honest, will happen. The case isn’t slick and even has a textured back to make it easy for little hands to hold onto.

It’s easy to take with you anywhere, thanks to the attached handle and included straps. You can even use the straps to hang it on the back of your seat for your kids to watch movies while you’re driving. The handle doubles as a stand, though it can be a bit touchy to find the right spot without the tablet falling over.

Overview of Features

Just because it’s made for kids doesn’t mean it’s not a powerful tablet. It even includes Android 9.0 (Pie). The crystal clear 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 IPS HD display looks great no matter which angle you choose to look at it. There’s also an auto-adjust brightness feature to reduce eye strain.

It features 2 GB of RAM and a 64-bit quad core processor with up to 1.3 GHz processing power. There’s 32 GB of storage included, but you can easily expand this to up 128 GB.

The tablet has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It includes a micro HDMI port and a micro USB port.

Kids get their own camera for capturing memories with a 2 MP front and 8 MP rear camera.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box. The case, a colorful matching stylus that fits securely into the case, charging cable, instruction booklets, and straps are in the box.

The Kidoz booklet is for one of two parental control features, and it’s incredibly easy to set up – but more on that in a moment.

You even get colorful stickers. What kid doesn’t love decorating with stickers?

Exploring the Tablet

The setup process works like any other Android tablet. I had to add my Google account, connect to Wi-Fi and let the tablet check for updates. Then, it was time to explore to see what comes on the DragonTouch KidzPad Y88X 10 by default.

The initial screen is kid-friendly.

However, you probably wouldn’t want a kid using Chrome, the Google left-swipe homescreen, or the Google search bar without setting up some parental controls first. Of course, all of this is easy to customize. You can limit which sites they’re allowed to visit, choose a different browser to reduce tracking, and any other protections you may want.

The default apps include those pictured in the image below.

Some notable apps include Ebook, Family Link, KIDOZ, and FM Radio. Family Link and KIDOZ are the two parental control apps. FM Radio allows kids to listen to local FM radio stations, even while offline, using nothing but wired headphones for an antenna. And yes, it works well. You can listen to the radio through the speakers, which has decent sound, especially for a tablet.

Ebook may easily become one of your child’s favorite apps. The DragonTouch KidzPad Y88X 10 includes twenty official Disney audio books for free.

The screen’s responsive and works well with the stylus. Also, everything loads quickly without any lengthy lag between apps.

Trying Out KIDOZ

If you want to lock the tablet down and ensure your child only accesses certain things, KIDOZ is the perfect way to do it. I was surprised at just how easy it is to configure. I set up a temporary child account to test it.

The app does ask for several permissions, but these are used for the included apps.

The parent is able to set up KIDOZ to include what they want. It’s simple to customize everything based on your child’s age and interests.

The apps, videos, games, and websites are kid-friendly. Kids are able to download more appropriate apps without parents being too concerned using the KIDOZ store.

You may be thinking that kids can still restart the tablet to access whatever they want or just go back to the homescreen. But I was able to choose to boot directly into KIDOZ with no option to exit. You can only change it back with the parent’s login.

Of course, if KIDOZ isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, use Google’s Family Link, which is already installed. We have a full guide on how to set it up. You can even use both options in tandem to better monitor what your child’s doing on the tablet and check in on their overall screen time.

Final Thoughts

The DragonTouch KidzPad Y88X 10 is an extremely versatile tablet that’s perfect for kids. Since you can set up multiple accounts, multiple kids can share it easily. It can grow with them.

The protective case is ideal for small hands and withstands common bumps. I actually tried walking with it and dropping it. No problems at all. The straps were easy to connect and don’t come off unless you press the buttons on the back of the handle.

At just $129.99, it’s incredibly affordable, while keeping your more expensive iPad or Samsung Galaxy out of your kid’s reach. You can buy your own today directly at DragonTouch.
