After having a regular security camera outside our home for a few years, we upgraded to a Ring Video Doorbell and have not looked back. I bought it during one of Amazon’s frequent sales a few years ago and have found it to be so useful.
Any security camera is a bona fide help. Safety, of course, is the number one way they can assist you. You can be notified of someone on your doorstep, motion walking by, etc. It makes me feel so much safer to have a camera focused on my front door. It’s also helpful for knowing when deliveries are made, especially this time of year. That way they’re not sitting out on your doorstep to be stolen.
An unexpected bonus with my Ring Video Doorbell is letting me know the whereabouts of my family members. I can look back on past footage to let me know when they left the house, if they’ve returned, if they drove themselves, got a ride, etc. My adult daughter still lives with us, so it’s an easy way to check in on her without bothering her. I can video the door on my Fire TV, iPhone, Echo Show, etc., whether I’m at home or away.
A very unexpected bonus was that it showed us that our family dog had escaped. We were out that night, and I had notice of motion in the front, which I ignored. I then received a notification that there was a person on my doorstep. I checked, and it looked like a coyote on its hind legs and not a person. Upon further inspection, it turned out it was my dog! He was looking for me inside my car and on the doorstep. We flew home and got him inside and cannot figure out how he got out. We never leave him outside.
But the Ring Video Camera saved him. It let us know he was out there looking for us. Without the notifications, he would have been out alone for another couple of hours, at least. Checking past footage, he’d been out for at least three hours and had left our home at one point, then come back.
